PORSCHE 964 TURBO: OVER 500 PS BASED ON THE OEM+ PRINCIPLE

A classic Porsche 964 Turbo 3.3, custom-tuned to the customer’s specifications: Approximately 500 PS, a modern suspension, a larger braking system, and targeted technical upgrades combine with maximum authenticity.

ORIGINAL. AND BETTER.

With this Porsche 964 Turbo, DAVID Atelier takes a clear approach: preserve as much originality as possible and make changes only where modern technology adds real value.

The classic form, the original color scheme, and the characteristic details of the 964 Turbo remain the focal point. At the same time, the engine, suspension, braking system, cooling system, electronics, and interior are specifically enhanced.

The goal is not a radical overhaul, but rather a custom-configured Porsche 964 Turbo that drives more modernly, more powerfully, and with greater precision—without losing its original character.

PORSCHE 964 TURBO OEM+: WHAT’S CHANGING?

ENGINE & PERFORMANCE

The original 3.3-liter turbo engine serves as the basis, but it won’t remain technically unchanged. A new engine configuration with an output of around 500 PS is planned. This also increases the demands on the cooling system, braking system, and suspension.

SUSPENSION

The vehicle is equipped with a KW V3 HLS4 suspension system with a hydraulic lift function. The compact new HLS pump can be integrated in a space-saving manner and allows for more practical everyday use despite the suspension’s sporty tuning.

BRAKES & OIL COOLING

The braking system is being extensively upgraded. In addition, the 964 is being equipped with a larger oil cooling system featuring original Porsche components from the 993 Turbo WLS2 to reliably handle the increased thermal load resulting from the performance upgrade.

ORIGINALITY & OEM+

Where technically and aesthetically appropriate, the existing structure is preserved. At the same time, we prefer to use original Porsche solutions and components rather than resorting to generic aftermarket parts.

A CUSTOM-BUILT PORSCHE 964 TURBO

What sets DAVID ATELIER apart is its commitment to customization.

Working closely with the future owner, we determine exactly how the vehicle should ultimately look, drive, and feel. From engine performance, suspension, and brakes to paintwork, interior, seats, steering wheel, wheels, and even the smallest details—the result is a Porsche tailored precisely to its owner.

This project therefore showcases not only a technical modification but the entire journey from the existing vehicle to a bespoke OEM+ Porsche.

PRESERVING THE ORIGINAL SUBSTANCE

The Porsche 964 Turbo has an exceptionally strong foundation. That is precisely why no more changes are made than necessary.

Although the vehicle has been repainted in its original color, well-preserved areas have been deliberately left untouched. The roof, for example, still has its original paint and will be preserved.

Care was also taken with the newly painted surfaces to achieve the thinnest possible paint layer. The goal is to achieve a look and material thickness that are as close as possible to the original finish.

This approach runs throughout the entire project:

Preserve what is worth preserving. Build upon it where it makes sense.

AROUND 500 PS: THE NEW ENGINE DESIGN

The Porsche 964 Turbo starts out as a classic 3.3-liter turbo. As part of the project, however, a new engine configuration is being developed with a target output of around 500 PS.

This doesn’t just change the engine’s power output. All systems related to the powertrain must also be calibrated for the higher power level.

These include, in particular:

  • Oil Cooling
  • Brake System
  • Chassis
  • Electronics
  • Clutch
  • Temperature Management

Therefore, the increase in performance is not viewed in isolation, but rather as part of a comprehensive vehicle concept.

OEM+ INSTEAD OF AFTERMARKET: OIL COOLING

In an air-cooled Porsche in particular, oil plays a key role in temperature management.

Higher engine power also increases thermal stress. That’s why the oil cooling system is upgraded accordingly.

Instead of using a generic aftermarket oil cooler, DAVID ATELIER employs original hoses and an original oil cooler from the Porsche 993 Turbo WLS2.

A custom bracket was fabricated for the installation, ensuring that the larger oil cooler fits neatly behind the bumper while still receiving adequate airflow.

This is precisely where the OEM+ philosophy shines through most clearly:

Modern performance with solutions from the world of Porsche.

KW V3 HLS4: MODERN SUSPENSION WITH LIFT FUNCTION

The new suspension system combines a KW V3 with the HLS4 hydraulic system.

The compact new HLS pump is neatly integrated into the front end of the vehicle. The hydraulic lines, electrical components, and wiring harness are routed so that the system fits as snugly and discreetly as possible within the vehicle.

The system’s main advantage is its lift function. This allows the vehicle’s height to be raised temporarily as needed, for example, when navigating driveways, ramps, or bumps in the road.

As a result, the suspension combines sporty performance with significantly greater practicality for everyday use.

THE BRAKING SYSTEM FOR MORE THAN 500 PS

With the increased engine power, the braking system is also being comprehensively upgraded.

Larger brake rotors and Porsche brake calipers are used. Care is taken not only to ensure the correct sizing but also to select the appropriate brake force control valve, so that the front and rear axles operate at the intended brake pressure.

New wear parts, fasteners, damping plates, and sensors complete the assembly.

The goal is not a single performance upgrade, but a technically coherent system as a whole.

A SOLID FOUNDATION RATHER THAN A COMPLETE RESTORATION

The vehicle’s underbody was simply ice-blasted and was intentionally left unpainted.

The reason is simple: It wasn’t necessary.

The vehicle shows no significant corrosion and is in very good overall condition. Rather than replacing its existing originality with a complete restoration, the existing structure will be cleaned and preserved.

The clutch assembly and engine compartment are also carefully overhauled and prepared before the new engine is installed.

THE INTERIOR: A CLASSIC LOOK WITH TARGETED MODERNIZATION

The project follows the same principle in the interior as well.

The dashboard, upper trim panels, and rear shelf are now upholstered in leather. The original rear window, which includes a rear wiper and rear window defroster, is replaced with an RS rear window without a wiper or defroster.

The original seats have been replaced with Recaro seats upholstered in Pepita fabric.

In addition:

  • a more precise shifter
  • a Momo steering wheel
  • an additional digital display
  • reupholstered interior components

used.

The digital display replaces the traditional clock and is used to show additional engine parameters. The other instruments remain unchanged.

This preserves the classic character of the 964 while sensibly complementing the technical requirements of the new engine design.

THE DAVID ATELIER APPROACH

This project clearly demonstrates what DAVID Atelier stands for:

Preserving originality. Improving technology. Creating individuality.

A classic Porsche isn’t completely reinvented. Instead, we carefully assess which elements can be preserved and where modern technology offers genuine added value.

The result is a vehicle that remains unmistakably recognizable as a Porsche 964 Turbo, yet operates at a significantly more modern technical level.

THE PROJECT CONTINUES

The first phase of the project focuses on the foundation and technical setup.

The chassis, braking system, oil cooling, electrical system, and interior have been prepared. The next steps will involve installing the new engine, completing the vehicle, and fine-tuning the entire vehicle.

PART 02: Engine, Final Assembly, and Next Development Stage
