THE PROJECT IS TAKING SHAPE<\/p>\n
Following the assessment and disassembly described in Part 1, the Porsche 964 is now moving into the next phase.<\/p>\n
The body has been completely stripped of paint, revealing dents, previous repairs, and minor irregularities. Among other things, there are areas that were previously filled with body filler.<\/p>\n For the current restoration, a different approach is being taken.<\/p>\n The panels are being restored to their original shape as much as possible. This ensures that the subsequent paint job can be applied to a significantly cleaner body surface.<\/p>\n The front cover serves as an example.<\/p>\n An existing dent has already been pulled out, but it still needs further work and tinning. This will significantly reduce the amount of body filler needed later on.<\/p>\n Older damage is also visible on the side panels. A dented wheel well, which had previously been repaired with body filler, is now being professionally pulled out again.<\/p>\n The focus here is not on the quickest repair, but on restoring the body as cleanly and durably as possible.<\/p>\n The new KW V3 with HLS<\/strong> has already been installed in the vehicle on a trial basis.<\/p>\n The HLS uses hydraulic cylinders and allows the vehicle to be raised or lowered at the push of a button. The system is designed for both the front and rear axles.<\/p>\n The owner plans to drive the Porsche in Tyrol at a later date, among other places. Steep driveways, narrow ramps, bumps, and mountain passes are part of everyday life there.<\/p>\n The HLS therefore enables two things at once:<\/p>\n The assembly is deliberately carried out now, before the body is painted.<\/p>\n For the hydraulic system, the pump, lines, and cable routes must be precisely positioned. In the trunk, a temporary mounting position for the pump is first determined.<\/p>\n For the steel-braided hose, for example, an existing, unused cable passage is used. This minimizes the need for additional modifications to the body.<\/p>\n As few modifications as possible, as many as necessary.<\/strong><\/p>\n The system’s wiring is also customized for each vehicle.<\/p>\n A longer steel-braided hose is delivered, which is measured precisely on site and cut to the required length.<\/p>\n Since the HLS is being built as a custom configuration for this vehicle, the cable routing and positioning must be determined on a case-by-case basis.<\/p>\n Only when everything fits properly will the system be dismantled again, and the body can be sent to the paint shop.<\/p>\n In addition, KW V3 Clubsport strut bearings<\/strong> are used.<\/p>\n They allow for more precise suspension tuning and help tailor the vehicle’s handling more specifically to the vehicle itself and its intended use.<\/p>\n The goal remains the same as in Part 1:<\/p>\n A classic Porsche 964 that handles like a sports car but is still practical for everyday use.<\/p>\n While the body is at the paint shop, work continues on refurbishing the axles.<\/p>\n Wheel bearings and other suspension components are inspected and replaced as needed. A few defective bearings had already become visible after the ice blasting.<\/p>\n This does not mean that components that look clean are automatically in like-new technical condition.<\/p>\n This, in particular, shows once again why it is important to thoroughly disassemble the vehicle.<\/p>\n The new set of wheels has also arrived in the meantime.<\/p>\n The BBS wheels are initially mounted on a trial basis to assess the vehicle’s height and proportions. A final adjustment is not yet possible at this stage, as the vehicle is largely empty and therefore does not yet have its final weight.<\/p>\n The final height and axle geometry are therefore adjusted only after the vehicle has been fully assembled and painted.<\/p>\n Since the engine will later be enlarged to 3.8 liters and tuned to produce about 300 PS, the braking performance will also be adjusted.<\/p>\n A larger braking system based on the Porsche 964 RS<\/strong> is used.<\/p>\n While the previous brake disc has a diameter of about 300 millimeters, the RS brake disc is larger, at about 330 millimeters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The larger diameter provides greater leverage, resulting in:<\/p>\n At the same time, the larger red brake system also looks much better behind the new BBS wheels.<\/p>\n The project is also making visible progress on the interior.<\/p>\n The new Recaro Pole Position seats<\/strong> have arrived. The seats are black on the outside, and the center panels feature the classic Pepita upholstery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n As a result, the interior deliberately incorporates classic Porsche design elements while remaining sporty and functional.<\/p>\n Combined with RS carpet and a Momo steering wheel, the result is an interior that will be significantly more minimalist and driver-oriented than the production version.<\/p>\n The interior has since been dismantled even further.<\/p>\n The existing insulation has been removed, while the wiring harness remains in the vehicle for now.<\/p>\n Later, new insulation material will be customized and installed in collaboration with the upholsterer.<\/p>\n This does more than just reduce weight. Noise comfort and interior quality are also deliberately taken into account.<\/p>\n Once the current modifications are complete, the vehicle will be completely disassembled again.<\/p>\n The suspension and axles will be removed again, and then the body will be placed on a paint rack.<\/p>\n Then the Porsche goes to the paint shop. Following the introduction of the project in Part 1, the vehicle is now completely stripped of its paint. This allows dents, dings, and previous repairs to be identified much more accurately and professionally repaired.<\/p>\n 00:30<\/p>\n Minor damage is visible on the hood and other areas of the body. Instead of simply filling these areas with body filler, the metal panels are reshaped and, in some cases, tinned. This creates a much cleaner base for the subsequent paint job.<\/p>\n 01:15<\/p>\n Once the bodywork is complete, the vehicle is completely disassembled again. However, before it goes to the paint shop, the chassis and HLS are first adjusted so that all necessary wiring and fasteners are already in place.<\/p>\n 01:35<\/p>\n The KW V3 with hydraulic HLS has been installed on a trial basis. Hydraulic cylinders allow the vehicle to be raised or lowered at the push of a button. The system is designed for both the front and rear axles.<\/p>\n 02:00<\/p>\n Among other places, the future owner plans to drive the Porsche in Tyrol. Steep inclines, mountain passes, and bumps in the road make the hydraulic lift system particularly useful. The vehicle can remain in its sporty, low-slung stance and still be raised when necessary.<\/p>\n 02:30<\/p>\n The pump and lines are initially installed on a temporary basis to determine the optimal position and routing. An existing cable passage is used to minimize the need for additional modifications to the body.<\/p>\n 03:10<\/p>\n In addition, KW V3 Clubsport strut bearings are used. They offer more adjustment options and allow for more precise tuning of the vehicle’s handling characteristics.<\/p>\n 03:40<\/p>\n On another wheel well, there is evidence of a previous repair. The area had previously been filled with body filler. Now the sheet metal is being properly reshaped so that the body can be rebuilt using significantly less filler material.<\/p>\n 04:15<\/p>\n The existing insulation has been completely removed. The wiring harness will remain in the vehicle for now. Later, new insulation will be custom-made in collaboration with the upholsterer and installed.<\/p>\n 04:35<\/p>\n After adjusting the HLS, the axles and suspension are removed again. The body is then placed on a paint rack, while the wheel bearings and other suspension components are overhauled or replaced at the same time.<\/p>\n 05:10<\/p>\n After ice blasting, many components look almost brand-new. Upon closer inspection, however, worn bearings become apparent, which are replaced during the rebuild.<\/p>\n 05:40<\/p>\n HLS hoses are custom-made for each vehicle. The steel-braided hose is measured, cut to length, and routed precisely along the predetermined path.<\/p>\n 06:35<\/p>\n The new wheel set is already ready and will initially be installed on a trial basis. However, the final vehicle height can only be adjusted after complete assembly and once the vehicle\u2019s weight is known.<\/p>\n 7:15 a.m.<\/p>\n To match the planned power increase, the Porsche is getting a larger brake system based on the Porsche 964 RS. Larger rotors and calipers are expected to significantly improve braking performance.<\/p>\n 07:45<\/p>\n The disc diameter increases from approximately 300 to about 330 millimeters. This increases the leverage, allowing the braking system to deliver greater braking power.<\/p>\n 8:25<\/p>\n The new seats have also arrived. We\u2019re using Recaro Pole Position seats with a black exterior and classic Pepita upholstery.<\/p>\n 09:20<\/p>\n The vehicle is now being further prepared; the suspension and HLS will be fully adjusted and then dismantled again.
